If you've had a gel manicure in the UK recently, you may have missed the news: the rules around what's allowed in that bottle are changing. Not as a rumour or a beauty-forum theory — as an actual regulatory shift, working its way through in stages this year.
Here's what's changing, why regulators are acting now, and — regardless of which chemical is or isn't banned — why your natural nails may still need help recovering from gels in the first place.
The UK Has Just Tightened the Rules on Gel Nails
Two changes are rolling out in the UK in quick succession:
- From 15 July 2026: the UV filter 4-MBC was banned in newly placed cosmetic products, and the threshold at which formaldehyde-releasing preservatives must carry a warning label was lowered.
- From 15 August 2026: TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) — the ingredient that helps gel polish cure quickly and stay glossy under UV or LED light — is banned in newly placed cosmetic products, alongside new concentration limits for the fragrance ingredient Hexyl Salicylate.
The change was confirmed in a written answer to a question raised in the House of Lords, following the EU's own ban on TPO, which has already been in force since September 2025.
Why TPO Got Flagged
TPO's job is to react under UV light so gel polish hardens quickly and holds its glass-like finish. The concern isn't that it's doing something exotic — it's that regulators have classified it as a CMR category 1B substance, meaning it's considered potentially carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction.
It's worth being clear-eyed here: most of the evidence behind this classification comes from animal studies, and direct proof of harm from occasional consumer use hasn't been established. But the ban reflects a precautionary approach — particularly relevant for nail technicians with repeated, cumulative occupational exposure, and for anyone getting gels done regularly over months and years.
The Damage That Was Never Really About the Chemicals
Here's the thing regulation doesn't fix: even with TPO gone, gel and acrylic manicures still involve a fairly rough process for your natural nail. The nail plate gets etched or buffed so the gel can grip, then soaked in acetone or mechanically scraped off at removal — often more than once, every few weeks, for months or years on end.
That cycle strips moisture and weakens the layers of keratin that make up your nail, whether or not the specific gel formula is compliant with the latest rules. Peeling, thinning, ridging and breakage are the result — and they don't resolve themselves the moment you stop getting gels. They need active rehabilitation.
